OpenWengo - better than Skype?
13 Jun 2007 14:38
I tried recently the open source VoIP software WengoPhone by OpenWengo organisation. WengoPhone is a VoIP software just like Skype, however, it also supports other chat protocols such as MSN, ICQ, Yahoo or GoogleTalk. And personally, I think it's better than Skype...

First of all, OpenWengo is open source. Skype is proprietary - I know for most people it's not important but I don't want to see any lock-in actions later. With open source such situation is far less probable.

I also like the support of third party protocols like Yahoo, MSN, ICQ or GoogleTalk. You can assign more identities to one contact and see everything on one place. The quality of video and audio conversations is comparable to Skype if not better. The quality (and required bandwidth) can be adjusted and it works. WengoPhone crashed while assigning 3rd protocols to a user but after all it worked well. At the moment I use Pidgin IM for instant chat but perhaps I'll drop it and use just WengoPhone instead. Other than that, you can call to land or mobile phone numbers just like in Skype too (of course, you need to buy credit to do that Smile

WengoPhone is a nice piece of software and in some aspects even better than Skype. So please, spread a word about it and switch to real free software. Smile
